MOTOZO’s creativity was truly exceptional, giving rise to teapots of various shapes and textures. He used high-quality clay with a moist, smooth texture and adorned the surfaces with his own distinctive patterns, often incorporating animal motifs. His process involved shaping the teapots with red clay (shudei) and then firing them to create a rich, deep black finish through a smoking technique at second firing.
This photo captures the teapot’s subtle texture and profound black color. The rim of the spout and the handle base are carefully shaved to reveal the red clay beneath, creating a striking contrast. The teapot body has three small feet, giving it a charming feel. Its handle, woven from vine, rises in a bold arc that adds both uniqueness and originality to the piece.
Equipped with a large tea strainer, the teapot pours smoothly. Until his passing in 2019, MOTOZO remained passionate about teapot-making, continually exploring new ideas and forms. We are deeply grateful for the remarkable works he left behind.
Motozo was one of teapot masters in Showa, Heisei Era of Japan.
