Sweets Plates: Modern Wabi-Sabi‐ Playful Yet Profound

These three small plates quietly embody the essence of Japanese nature, daily life, and the artist’s refined sensibility.
Each plate carries a distinct shape filled with meaning.
The light brown plate represents a dora—the gong struck by the host at the beginning of a tea ceremony. This rare design could only come from Izuno, an artist deeply involved in ceramics for tea. It reflects a modern sensibility while holding a profound sense of wabi-sabi.
The gourd-shaped plate features elegant modern curves and a texture that conveys wabi-sabi. Even the foot of the plate on its underside reflects this spirit. Interesting shape and feeling natre and offering a moment of joy when held in the hand.
The gray plate is inspired by a kome-dawara—a traditional straw bag used to store rice in Japan. Still seen today, it remains a nostalgic symbol of long-standing Japanese life. The texture of this bale-shaped plate is richly layered, created through multiple ceramic techniques that showcase the artist’s skill and deep engagement with material expression.
Each piece is playful yet profound, inviting quiet reflection. Though distinct in texture, shape, and color, when used together, these three plates harmonize, bringing the beauty and depth of Japanese culture to life.
Izuno studied design at Kyoto University of the Arts and explored the spirit of wabi-sabi and tea ceramics through his practice. His works are the result of a deep understanding of both aesthetic design and the philosophy behind Japanese tea culture. Each plate is a unique work of art.
