Hagi-yaki Kaneta Masanao Matcha Tea Bowl Tenchozan Kiln 兼田昌尚

Hagi-yaki, a traditional Japanese pottery with a history spanning over 400 years, is renowned for its distinctive colors and textures that exude warmth and softness. Its hues often range from delicate pinks to oranges and creamy whites, with a gentle orange tint being particularly notable.

One of Hagi-yaki’s most captivating features is its ability to evolve over time. Known as “Hagi no Nanabake” (Hagi’s Seven Changes), the color and texture of the pottery transform as it is used, especially as a tea utensil. This natural aging process adds a profound charm, making each piece uniquely beautiful as it matures.

This particular piece is the work of Kaneta Masanao, born in 1953, who became the 8th-generation head of Tenchoyama Kiln in 2005. Created several decades ago, this tea bowl exemplifies the traditional Hagi style, offering a timeless connection to the rich heritage of this 400-year-old pottery tradition.

Raku-yaki, Hagi-yaki, Karatsu-yaki are well known as 3 major matcha bowls and loved by historical tea masters of Japan.
