Features of Ise Ittō-bori
Ise Ittō-bori can be literally translated as “One-Stroke Carving from Ise Area” . It is a traditional wood carving technique originating from the Ise region in Mie Prefecture, characterized by the following:
The Ittō-bori Technique
True to its name, which means “one-stroke carving,” this technique involves using a chisel to carve the wood with bold, decisive strokes. The resulting carvings feature clearly defined lines and surfaces, exuding a rustic yet powerful charm.
Materials and Finishing
The primary materials are Japanese woods like cypress (hinoki) and camphor (kusunoki), known for their softness and pleasant aroma. After carving, the pieces are often partially painted to enhance their natural warmth and vivid beauty.
Design Themes
Deeply connected to Shinto and the Ise Shrine, Ise Ittō-bori often depicts motifs from mythology, animals, and auspicious symbols. Popular subjects are figurines of the zodiac animals.
Handcrafted Warmth
Each piece is handcrafted, reflecting the artisan’s unique spirit and individuality. These carvings offer a tactile experience, allowing you to enjoy the wood’s fragrance and texture while feeling a deep connection to nature.
Ota Yui’s works exude warmth and blend seamlessly with modern interiors, making them a perfect addition to your home.
