Wajima Lacquerware Bowl – The Quiet Beauty of Time-Honored Craftsmanship

This bowl is a Wajima lacquerware piece crafted in or before the mid-Showa period (pre-1970s).

Wajima-nuri, a traditional lacquerware from Wajima City in Ishikawa Prefecture, is known for its exceptional durability and rich, multi-layered finish, created through a painstaking process involving dozens of steps. Pieces from this era were made entirely by hand, using time-honored techniques passed down through generations of artisans. They are both functional for daily use and deeply refined in appearance.

In recent years, the demand for lacquerware in Japan has declined, while the cost of new Wajima pieces has risen significantly due to increased material and labor costs, and a shrinking pool of skilled artisans. Furthermore, the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake caused severe damage to many workshops and artisan homes in Wajima, making the future of production and skill transmission uncertain.
