The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido – Fukaya Station

This teapot is from series of “The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido Road ” produced in late Showa era.  (Shōwa Era of Japan 1926–1989)

“The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido Road” is originally from series of landscape prints by the Japanese Ukiyo-e artist Hokusai Katsushika (1760 – 1849)

On this teapot, 10th station on the Kisokaido Road “Fukaya Station ” is engraved.

You can feel the the mood and custom of the times in the art. 

About 40 years ago, there was a boom of collecting artistic teapots among art craft collectors in Japan. Teapot artists in Tokoname created artistic and high quality teapots to fulfill collectors needs.

This teapot is from the age.

You can feel the good clay of the time ( fine texture and has glow) .
Shape is typical late Showa era style, which is bold and simple (body, lid, handle) .

Caving is very deep and bold. It is dynamic. It shows the energy of the artist and people’s preference at that time.

Strainer(Filter) is also handmade.

Teapot body is rather thick that carving lines are deep and bold. 
Nowadays, this kind of deep & bold carving is not seen in Tokoname teapots.

Clay, Shape, Carving.. Everything shows late Showa era of Japan. 
You can feel Japanese teapot art history from this teapot.
