This teapot is from the series “The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō Road”, produced in the late Shōwa era  (Shōwa Era of Japan 1926–1989).

The “Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō Road” was originally a famous series of landscape prints by the ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849). On this teapot, the 12th station, Kuragano – Karasukawa River, is carved.

About 40 years ago, there was a boom in collecting artistic teapots among Japanese craft art collectors. To meet this demand, Tokoname teapot artists created highly artistic and finely crafted pieces. This teapot comes from that period.

The clay of the time is of excellent quality—fine in texture with a natural glow. The shape is typical of the late Shōwa style: bold and simple in its body, lid, and handle.

The carving is very deep and dynamic, expressing both the energy of the artist and the taste of the people of that era. The strainer (filter) is also handmade.

The body of the teapot is rather thick, which allows the carved lines to appear deep and powerful. Such bold carving is rarely seen in Tokoname teapots today.
