Takatori Hassen XIII (Takatori Sousen) Kakewake Cup
Takatori Hassen XIII (Takatori Sousen) Kakewake Cup Takatori-Yaki 6F
Simple, natural and warm.
This cup has 2 different glazing applied. The technique of art is called “kake-wake”Literally, 掛 “Kake” means apply (glazing), 分” wake” means separately. 掛分(kakewake) is : 2 different glazing is applied. This art technique is seen Takatori-yaki often.
Milky white clay is straw ash glaze which Hassen made by burning straw.
Brownish glaze is called candy glaze (Ameyu glaze) which shows beautiful shade of brown. The mixture of two glaze show warm tasteful yellowish color. Both glaze are Hassen’s blend. Mixture of those two glazes makes third nuance color.
Inside of the cups shows 3 colours, brown, white, yellowish milky brown.
This cup has an asymmetrical shape, with undulating edges that evoke the feeling of a natural landscape. Under the glaze, you can see random, horizontal lines—some thick and some thin—created by the potter’s wheel, which enhance its warmth and organic feel.
The foot of the cup features a design of the spiral pattern (itome) left by the string used to separate the cup from the clay after shaping. The itome (spiral mark left by the cutting string) has a rustic yet elegant charm. It’s a pattern deliberately crafted to be a highlight of the piece. Even though a potter may wish to preserve the itome, if the overall balance of the cup is off—such as the foot being too tall—it would have no choice but to trim it. Achieving the perfect itome requires delicate attention to detail and careful adjustments to maintain harmony in the cup’s proportions. Even the inside of the foot reveals a rich, detailed landscape.
The piece offers much to appreciate, from the clay, form, and glaze to the interplay of two colors, the flowing thickness of the glaze, and the hidden elegance in the finer details . And they are so harmonious.
The clay is a unique blend of Hassen XIII.
Most of the clay is from Koishiwara and Nanakuma in Fukuoka prefecture (whereHassen kiln is located)
Takatori Hassen Kiln started in 17th century, produces Japanese tea ceremony ware as main works.
