SUZUYAKI Pottery Seminar in Sichuan China

In May, we visited Chengdu and Ya’an in Sichuan Province, where we held a lecture on Suzu-yaki pottery from Oku-Noto, Ishikawa.
In Chengdu, there seems to be a higher number of customers who favor the dark, mysterious, and beautiful Suzu-yaki compared to other regions. I had long wondered if this was a coincidence, and during this trip, the mystery was finally solved.
Sichuan has a long tradition of producing black pottery and clay pots (such as 荥経黒砂Yingjing Black Sand), which are an integral part of daily life. According to local customers, this makes Suzu-yaki feel very familiar and approachable. Visiting local archaeological museums, the production areas of Yingjing Black Sand, and local potters also helped deepen our understanding. We plan to share more about this in the future.
This time, customers who had previously purchased Suzu-yaki online wanted to learn more about it. Shiha Tea & Comfort organized and provided interpretation for a lecture by Suzu-yaki potter Takashi Shinohara in Chengdu.
People interested in Suzu-yaki gathered at a customer’s home. In a garden party–like atmosphere, we explained the history of Suzu-yaki, its production methods, and its unique characteristics.
The guests were impressed to learn that the potter personally collects clay from the mountains and tests its texture and aroma. They also found it fascinating to learn about the significance of firing in a wood kiln and how to appreciate the landscapes created by natural glazes. It was clear that their interest in Suzu-yaki deepened even further.

It was a wonderful cultural exchange through pottery. The customers mentioned that they meet with friends several times a month to enjoy tea outdoors. They also brew jasmine tea in their Suzu-yaki teapots.

We would be delighted to hold more of these exchanges locally and share the enjoyment with everyone.
