Suzu Ware Arrives in Xinjiang Uygur
The Suzu ware ceramics from Ishikawa Prefecture that we sent to a customer in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have arrived. These are works by Takashi Shinohara.
Suzu ware, often referred to as the “phantom ancient pottery,” had disappeared from history for about 400 years. Its revival about 50 years ago adds a mysterious charm to its story.
Suzu Tea ware (Gong Dao Bei – Tea Pitcher)
In Japan, this vessel is called “katakuchi” (a type of pouring sake vessel), but among Chinese tea enthusiasts, it is used as a “Fairness Cup(Gong Dao Bei)” In China, tea is not poured directly from the teapot into the tea cups. Instead, it is first poured into the Fairness Cup, and then from the Fairness Cup into the individual tea cups.
The term “Gong Dao” means “fairness,” and this tool is used to ensure that everyone receives tea of the same strength and flavor.
Since Fairness Cup(Gong Dao Bei) are not typically found among Japanese tea utensils, we introduce high-quality Katakuci from our collection as Fairness Cups to our customers.
Suzu Ware: Customer Review from Xinjiang Uygur
The comment from our customer upon receiving the item was, “绝逼拉风,” which, when translated simply into Japanese, means “super cool.”
In English, this could be expressed as “Absolutely cool.”
The customer was very satisfied. It fills me with joy to know that a piece crafted with care by a Japanese artisan can bring satisfaction to someone 4000 kilometers away. Being part of that process is deeply fulfilling for me as well.

Report from 5 Years Later: 2021
In 2021, five years after the purchase, we received photos from the customer. The Suzu ware has been used over the years and has developed a rich patina and luster. The feedback we received is that it improves with use.
